What is Neurodivergent -Affirming Therapy?
Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy (NAT) is a therapeutic approach that focuses on celebrating your strengths and unique ways of thinking rather than viewing neurodivergence as something to be treated. NAT encourages you to discover more about yourself, speak up for what you need, and learn strategies to deal with challenges that are specific to you. This type of therapy recognizes neurodiversity as an inherent aspect of human diversity and validates your experiences. At its core, NAT is about empowerment. By providing a safe and supportive environment, NAT can help individuals build self-esteem and acceptance.
I offer NAT counseling services for individuals across the neurodivergent spectrum, including ADHD, ADD, ASD, and other diagnoses. I recognize that what works for neurotypical brains does not necessarily work for those who are neurodivergent. Our work together will be tailored specifically to what helps you and to your unique needs using a nonjudgemental, strengths-based approach. I provide a safe space for open communication, trust-building, and empowerment around your experiences.
We will set goals based on your needs and what’s important to you. This may include exploring how the neurodivergent brain works, discovering needs that may have been ignored or unmet, finding your authentic self, addressing your emotions around being neurodivergent, working on difficulties in social situations, adjusting the physical or virtual space to address sensory sensitivities, managing tasks, and creating a life that is right for you and your needs.
My Approach to NAT utilizes a combination of evidence-based strategies and skill building to address challenges and foster growth and incorporates:
Strengths-Based Focus: emphasizes identifying and celebrating the strengths and abilities of neurodivergent individuals.
Empowerment and Self-Advocacy: encourages self-discovery and self-advocacy, builds self-esteem, and develops coping strategies tailored to your individual needs to promote a sense of agency and autonomy.
Cultivating a Positive Identity: explores and affirms neurodivergent identities, fostering a positive sense of self, and countering societal stigmas and stereotypes.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): focuses on identifying problematic beliefs that impact your feelings, and working together on developing practical strategies to modify your thoughts and behavior patterns.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT); helps you explore and process intense emotions and learn effective coping strategies; encourages self-acceptance and personal growth through four key skill areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotional regulation.
I can help you identify and work with your unique challenges and needs, including:
Navigating Social Challenges
Many neurodivergent individuals face difficulties in navigating social interactions, understanding social cues, and forming relationships. In therapy I provide a safe space to explore and develop effective social skills to cultivate more meaningful connections.
Sensory Sensitivities
Sensory processing differences can lead to heightened sensitivities or challenges in processing sensory information, impacting daily experiences. I can help you adapt to your environment and develop strategies that meet your individual sensory needs and emotional regulation.
Improving Relationships
Neurodivergent individuals may encounter challenges in forming and maintaining relationships due to differences in communication styles or social nuances. In therapy you can build interpersonal skills that will foster healthier and more fulfilling connections with others.
Executive Functioning
Challenges in executive functioning, such as organization, time management, and planning, can impact daily life. NAT focuses on enhancing these skills and providing tools for improved overall functioning
Addressing Mental Health
Neurodivergent individuals may be more susceptible to mental health challenges including anxiety and depression. Therapy offers a supportive environment to address these concerns, recognizing the intersectionality of neurodivergence and mental well-being.
Developing Coping Strategies
The neurodivergent experience often involves unique challenges. Through therapy, individuals can develop personalized coping strategies to navigate daily life successfully.
Enhancing Self-Understanding
NAT promotes self-discovery and self-acceptance. It provides a platform to explore one’s identity, strengths, and challenges, contributing to a positive sense of self.
Navigating Transitions
Life transitions, such as entering college or the workforce, can be particularly challenging for neurodivergent individuals. Therapy provides guidance and support during these pivotal moments.
Building Self-Advocacy Skills
Advocating for one’s needs is crucial for neurodivergent individuals, whether in educational settings, workplaces, or daily life. Therapy builds self-advocacy skills, empowering individuals to communicate effectively and assertively, and to thrive with personalized support and accommodations.
